Seattle, show us your Celluloid!

Submissions are open for the 2012 edition of the History Is____ Film Competition. Filmmakers of all ages and experience levels are invited to participate.

Last year, MOHAI wrapped-up its first History Is _____ film competition with overwhelming success. We invited you to tell us what history means to you in a short film of 5 minutes or less, and you responded with over 40 submissions - many of which have subsequently gained recognition in regional and national film competitions! Let’s see if this year we can beat that number and explore the many meanings of history.

In the meantime, check out the 2010-2011 winners here for inspiration!

The Seattle Founders Day Festival this year is August 11th and 12th,the second weekend in August. One really awesome detail of the festival is the costumed “founders” a group of scripted actors playing the roles of the original Seattle Founding mothers and fathers. Followed by appearances from other notable Seattle settlers, like the Mercer Girls, Madam Damnable, and making her first appearance this year Ms Lou Graham. It is by no means required, but we do encourage period costumes if you can, and we'll be offering prizes for the most “authentic” early settlers attire.

If you fancy an evening out in your finest, Victorian, Late Victorian, or Edwardian fashions, there's a club for that. While researching this article I uncovered a whole society of revelers that frequently arrive at various events festooned in early American fashions. Possibly the largest group in the Seattle area is called Somewhere in Time Unlimited. SITU both organizes and links to events where not only vintage clothing is encouraged, but some where it's required for entry. The groups website at http://www.situseattle.com maintains an updated list of these events, as well as a mountain of info about the clothes, where to find costumes to rent or buy, as well as a Design Studio page that guides people through making their own costumes. Who doesn't want to know how to build a bussle out of thrift store finds?

Seattle is lucky enough to have an expert in Victorian fashions renting quality garments in the Roosevelt Neighborhood. Vintage Costumers at 7011 Roosevelt Way specializes in vintage fashions for men and women. The website at http://www.arniesvintagecostumers.com shows only a small selection of what this three story building has to offer. Going there and trying stuff on is the best way to find your unique 1800's look. Are you a Dandy? Or more working class? The selection covers the full range from Southern Gentlemen and River Boat Gamblers, to Abe Lincoln. All the costumes rent with all the necessary accessories to really bring your look alive. For instance, a typical Victorian outfit includes all of the following; Grey cutaway jacket, pants, vest, shirt, tie, top or bowler hat, hanky, watch chain, gloves, shoes, and even spats!

If you live on the east side there's options for you too. Bellevue's A Masquerade at 13310 Bel-Red Road, offers a huge selection of relativity high end pieces. One big twist at A Masquerade is that most of the costumes are also available for purchase. Another unique bit is the period western selections, perfect for the early Seattle Gold Miners or Lumberjack look. The selection of woman’s gowns might be one of the greatest in the northwest with fine intricate details of lace and embroidery. As with most costumers the website at http://www.amasquerade.com is by no means representative of the full inventory and a visit is really the best way to know what era, look, or role you'd like to play. A Masquerade is also a really great source for customized pieces uniquely designed to fit the Steampunk mystic.
